Job description

Hanken School of Economics, Department of Finance and Economics (Subjects: Finance, Statistics, Economics), invites applications for a position as Lecturer in Statistics (tenure track; Swedish lektor). The position is to be held in Helsinki and the corresponding contract is permanent, starting on 1 August 2024. We are interested in candidates with teaching and research experience in business and economic statistics, econometrics and mathematics for business and economics. The candidate is expected to have an excellent command of English and, in addition, preferably a good command of Swedish.

Statistics at Hanken

The subject Statistics is responsible for statistics training (including mathematics) to all Hanken students as well as business-and-economics professionals. For more information, see Statistics Website. Current research in Statistics is concentrated on econometrics and financial econometrics.

The lecturer will be responsible for teaching, supervision and carrying out research. A new Bachelor in Business programme will start in the autumn 2024. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to developing and teaching two courses in the programme: Mathematics for Economics and Business and Statistical Analysis for Economics and Business.

The responsibilities include:

  • Teaching courses at different levels (BSc and MSc) and in different learning environments.
  • Supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses.
  • Developing courses, teaching materials and learning environments.
  • Planning and development of the subject.
  • Research and publication activities in economic and business statistics, and cooperation with business and society.
  • Contribution to working groups and other administrative duties.

The full-time position has an annual working time of 1612 hours. During the academic year, it is expected that a minimum average of three days per week is spent at the office in Helsinki to actively contribute to the research and teaching environment. Teaching tasks are in general allocated based on the curriculum needs of the subject.


The candidate is expected to have a recently completed doctoral degree (no more than 3 years) in a relevant field, which includes qualifications in Statistics, or nearly completed doctoral degree, as well as teaching experience in Statistics.

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field, which includes qualifications in Statistics.
  • Experience of teaching statistics (including mathematics) in the context of business and/or economics with the use of modern software.
  • Excellent skills in English language.

The applicants will be reviewed based on their teaching, research, institutional service, and societal interaction. When evaluating the applicants’ qualifications, the main focus will be on the potential to provide high-quality teaching in statistics and related relevant fields, and the potential to conduct scientific research in the field in question. Applicants are required to have fluent command of English. Hanken supports international faculty in learning the Swedish language.

The salary is based on the university salary system in Finland. The exact salary level will depend on the qualifications and performance. The annual salary range for a lecturer starts from around 50.000 euros and for a university lecturer from around 56.000 euros (including holiday contributions. The salary level can be higher for candidates with extensive merits (research, teaching, activity in the scientific community and/or societal impact). In addition, the employment includes occupational healthcare as well as pension contributions. Hanken rewards excellence in teaching and research.
